Social Media Vs Reality Houseplant Studio 2022

The Concept - RHS Chelsea

The display aimed to capture the dichotomy of how plants (and often lifestyles) are portrayed through social media platforms like Instagram versus the horticultural reality of growing tropical plants indoors. The space is divided into two sides to reflect this.

The Social Media side features some rare, unusual and sought after houseplants that are often shown off on Social Media. This is contrasted with the reality space which represents the scenes in a lot of homes, often where growers without access to a private outdoor space creatively maximise the opportunities to garden indoors.

The front and outside of the garden

The front and outside of the garden - designed as an ode to succulents and cacti. Many species on display including some rarer hardy Echeveria.

The Social Media display - includes an glass cabinet converted into a greenhouse to grow some more humidity loving species. The wall is filled with well grown specimens of more unusual sought after aroids.

Reality

Reality - presented tidier for Chelsea of course. Consists of more common plants grown to a good size, bookshelf filled with houseplant books, journals and botanical literature. The coffee table has terrariums plant propagation and an Epipremnum aureum being potted up.

Above this we have an epiphyte display - orchids, tillandsia species and moss are grown epiphytically as they would in nature, hanging from branches in trees.
